How the hotel Manoir d’Auteuil fits in the Art Deco movement

The Art Deco movement originated at the beginning of the 20th century just before the First World War and it took off from the 1920s until the 1930s.

The Art Deco style was embedded in the mainstream culture as opposed to the Art Nouveau style that preceded it. The polychromy and the asymmetry of Art nouveau is the opposite of the Art Deco with the warm and luxurious colors with the walleye and with sharp tones such as orange and blue. It is paired with symmetrical shapes and round tables and accessories in volume and with curved or sleek shapes.

It was during an international exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts, held in the city of Paris in 1925 that the public discovered this new style. And it was the first style that had an influence on the whole world passing of course by France, then Spain, Great Britain, North America until India and Japan to only name few.

Decorative Art or its diminutive Art Deco takes shape in the interior architectural domain. Its particular design is also obtained thanks to stained glass, sculptures, tapestries, paintings, typical cabinetmaking, goldsmithing and ceramics.

The Art Deco style is also recognized by its geometrical, orderly and symmetrical appearance. The use of smooth concrete is opposed to the brick wall of the previous decorative current as per of the use of oak wood, mahogany, etc.

Several buildings were built in the Art Deco spirit, including the Price building in Old Quebec. Besides numerous houses and mansions there were also Art Deco built churches, railway stations and casinos built in France, and from the world of libraries, operas, cinemas, villas and palaces.

Thus, in our contemporary era, the Manoir d’Auteuil Hotel invites us to the elegance and luxury of a great era that is the Art Deco style with its careful and luxurious decoration.
