The Morrin Center in Old Québec

The Morrin Center in Old Québec

The Morrin Cultural Center is a hidden gem of Old Quebec, just a 3 minutes walk from the hotel Le Manoir d’Auteuil. The Morrin Center is a multifunctional place where the cultural memory is represented as well as the historical contribution of the English-speaking community of Quebec City.

This building is a heritage building designated as a national historic site and is open to the public for guided tours. An interesting point is that the guides are dressed in period costumes. The Morrin Center is a place that has experienced four different functions since the 18th century.

– The Royal Redoubt between the years 1712 and 1808

– The common prison of Quebec’s city between the years 1813 and 1868

– The Morrin College until the early 20th century

– The Literary and Historical Society of Quebec until today

In addition to the private library of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec, the center also hosts heritage spaces for events and interpretation.

The origin of the Morrin patronym was given in honour of a previous owner of the building sold to Mr. Joseph Morrin who himself converted the old prison into a college for young English-speaking students in Quebec City.

The library worthy of a Harry Potter movie worth the trip by itself. This superb library is free to visitors without the need to take the guided tour if you only make a short stay in Old Quebec.
