24 Mar 5 historic gem to explore in Quebec City
Quebec City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is rich in historical sites. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious, these locations will immerse you in the city’s captivating past.
Here are five remarkable places to explore, each offering unique experiences that will help you create lasting memories!
1. The Citadel of Quebec | Quebec City

The Citadelle of Quebec City
Perched on Cap Diamant, the Citadel of Quebec is an impressive military site and the largest British fortress in North America. Built between 1820 and 1850 by the British to protect the city against a possible American invasion, it now houses the Royal 22nd Regiment, an elite military unit.
I recently spent a day there, and it was a fascinating experience. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a passionate guide who immersed us in the place’s history.
When visiting the Citadel, you can admire its imposing architecture and explore its museum. But what impressed me the most was the view. From the ramparts, the sight of Old Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River is breathtaking!
One of the highlights for me has to be the changing of the guard!
Just a heads up: for the summer season of 2025, the Music in Red Ceremony will replace the Changing of the Guard. You can catch this special event at 10 a.m. from Wednesday to Sunday, happening between June 26 and September 1, 2025.
I took the time to stroll around, appreciate the city from a different angle, and savor the peace up there, away from the tourist hustle and bustle of downtown.
Whether you’re a history buff or simply curious, it’s a trip worth the detour!

As you enter, you will descend beneath the Dufferin Terrace to explore the remains of the Château Saint-Louis. This château served as the official residence of the governors of la Nouvelle-France from the 17th century until it was destroyed by fire in 1834. Excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts that provide insight into the daily lives and interactions of the French , and the British regime.
I was truly impressed by how the past came to life during the tour. The well-preserved remains and passionate guides made me feel as though I was listening to the discussions of governors and soldiers from centuries ago.
As a bonus, we exited onto the Dufferin Terrace, which offers a breathtaking view of the St. Lawrence River—an ideal mix of history and beauty!

Upon arrival, I felt as though I had been transported through time. This location, once a brewery, an Intendant’s Palace, and a warehouse, is rich with centuries of history. Thanks to archaeological excavations, visitors can explore ancient foundations, remarkable artifacts, and interactive exhibits that illustrate life in Quebec City during both the French and British eras.
The best part is the atmosphere—where ancient stones meet modern technology, creating an immersive experience. You’ll leave with a newfound appreciation for the city’s history and the feeling of discovering a hidden gem.

On the lovely Place Royale, this charming church, built in 1688 on the ruins of Samuel de Champlain’s home, is one of the oldest in North America. Named to honor French victories against the British, it captures the rich colonial history of Quebec City.
Despite restorations, the church maintains its old-world charm with a beautifully carved wooden interior and elegant altar. Its simplicity and authenticity evoke the era of New France.
